Members of the Muwekma-Ohlone nation traveled for 93 days on horseback from their home in the San Francisco bay Area to Washington, DC. Along the way, members of tribes from across the continent joined the journey, titled “The Trail of Truth 2024”. Participants deemed the Trail a spiritual journey, not an act of protest, though it was intended to secure Federal recognition for the Muwekma People. A clerical error in the list of recognized Ohlone tribes left out the Muwekma-Ohlone, and it thrust them into a decades long battle with the Bureau of Indian Affairs to regain a place on the list which would protect their right to sovereignty over their lands.
